What’s important to you in your role?

What can happen when you work in corporate America for a long time, or anywhere in the corporate world for that matter, is that you tend to put the company’s well-being, values, ambitions, and projects over and above your own.

Well, that’s a fantastic way of keeping your job and elevating and advancing in it, but there can be detrimental effects, especially if you are in your 50’s and are either moving toward an SVP or C-suite role.

You want to begin to think about your relationships, your health, your fitness, your hobbies, or maybe starting your own business on the side that brings you a greater sense of fulfillment and enjoyment.

It’s going to be hard to do that if you’re constantly working 60-hour minimum weeks at your current place of employment, and that’s on a light week.

I recently spoke with one of my clients about this. He’s in demand and is employed by a top-tier organization. However, he works 60 hours plus, and deals with tons of office politics.

However, he also has a chance with his new job offer to set his own schedule, have a 40-hour work week, and rule the roost as far as what he needs to do to get the job done.

I asked him why this was a difficult decision, and it turns out that he had begun to prioritize the prior company’s well-being over his own, and that was the only thing standing in the way of him going with the plan that was going to offer him a better work-life balance.

Getting clear on this piece of the puzzle, he was able to realize the quality of life that he wanted to have; this is not about the wellness workshop that your company puts on that nobody adheres to. This was about a decision that he made for himself and his family. From that place of clarity, every other decision could be made to align with that, including where he would work next.

If you’re looking to advance, earn $300, $400, $500, or $700,000, and have an excellent work-life balance, I want you to know that it’s possible.

There are other brothers doing it right now, and so can you.

Step one is to get clear on how many hours you want to work a week.

Step two is determining how much you want to earn.

Step three is identifying the scope and responsibilities you want to have.

From there, you can vet the job opportunities coming your way or launch an active search campaign using a coach and an executive search firm to begin highlighting opportunities that can provide you with the pay and lifestyle you’re looking to leave right now.

Are you willing to put yourself first?
