True Confidence

A Game-Winning Ingredient

Confidence is the game-winning ingredient that many Black men either use or lack in achieving their career goals. Brothers with high levels of confidence can overcome obstacles more easily than those without them, as they view challenges as opportunities to grow and succeed. This internal state manifests itself through one's presence, communication, mindset, ability to connect with others, worldview, and aspirations.

However, a lack of confidence often leads to negative traits such as cockiness, argumentativeness, overbearing behavior, or shyness. While these qualities might be useful in small doses in the corporate world, which is essentially a team sport, relying on them too heavily will only hinder your progress. As a Black man in a senior leadership position within corporate America, you're racially outnumbered; therefore, adopting an arrogant attitude likely won't serve you well.

The root of low self-confidence could stem from childhood trauma like parental abandonment or substance abuse issues; feeling overwhelmed by moving from a small town to a big city; racial turmoil and anti-Black sentiment throughout history; or being one of the few Black individuals in predominantly white professional environments. Hiding this lack of confidence doesn't help anyone; it merely brushes the issue under the rug while still leaving you aware of its existence.

A lack of confidence can inhibit career progression for many brothers until they reach a standstill. But let me tell you: racism isn’t holding you back, nor are external factors like the economy or your personal life circumstances. I've worked with over 500 Black men (many in senior leadership roles), and what sets apart those who thrive from those who struggle is their level of self-assurance.

Your appearance doesn’t dictate success; whether you're tall and dark-skinned or light-skinned with wavy hair, regardless of height or weight, what truly matters is having faith in yourself. Once you admit that there are challenges within your own sense of self-worth and address them head-on, your professional life will open up.

If your career isn't where you want it to be, if you're not earning the income or achieving the satisfaction you desire, then something inside of you needs optimization. The sooner you face this truth and work on building your confidence, the sooner the world will unlock its potential for you.
