7-Figure Myth
Is it possible for Black men to make 7-figures?
Welcome to the Black Executive Men newsletter. If you are not a subscriber and want to join the newsletter, please do so below.
Most guys on LinkedIn think I’m joking when I say 7-figures.
“He must really mean $100,000 or mid 6-figures.”
“He couldn’t really mean 7-figures”.
Yes, man. I mean 7-figures.
A million dollars plus annual income in your job or business.
However one of the main problems in our community is low standards.
In my family, my mom just wanted me to go to college, which was good. But there was no expectation of which school or what I’d do after that.
My dad never really set a standard for what I should do except to hustle in a small-scale business.
My grandma wanted me to be a professional tennis player, but I wasn’t serious, I just played for fun.
In reality, I found myself in my sophomore year of high school on the “at-risk” student list.
I was from a poor, single-parent household (dad lived in the next city over), and my grades were around a 2.0.
However, I got around a good group of guys who were college bound, and so I wanted to go too.
I didn’t want to be left behind in Alameda while they were off living their best lives.
So I dug into some AP classes, got my GPA up, participated in extracurriculars, and graduated with honors.
I ended up at UCSB for a BA in Black Studies and pivoted later on to Antioch University in Los Angeles for my masters in clinical psychology.
However, I get it when some brothers question if I am talking about 7-figures in my LinkedIn posts.
They can’t wrap their minds around it.
I mean a million dollars every year.
I struggled financially in my 20’s to the point of almost not being able to afford bus transportation. Plus, my family growing up never talked about money.
When combined with my college education, which leaned heavily on social justice and Marxist at times, I thought rich people were evil oppressors.
They were capitalist colonizers who were responsible for slavery, the pain of working-class people, and my own poverty.
But then I started Black Executive Men, and my world changed.
I started meeting six-figure-earning brothers.
And my mind shifted.
Harvard MBA grads, from upper middle-class, two-parent Black families who went to private high schools.
I’d never spent time around these types of brothers, and they were amazing.
Kind, intelligent, educated, family-focused, morally strong, not trying to “hustle” anybody for cash or attention, and Black community-focused.
They had all their priorities lined up, and bright futures.
These dudes let me know it was possible for me too to make 6-figures and have a great life.
Being around 6-figure-earning brothers normalized it for me.
$150,000, $250,000, $400,000, $700,000.
I couldn’t believe these guys were making money I thought ballers, rappers, and drug dealers made.
That’s what I saw on TV growing up, so that’s what I knew.
I didn’t know there was a Black men’s business class.
But I soon realize these brothers exist but move quietly.
They shattered my belief that wealthy people were bad and poor people were good.
I began to see that the difference between rich and poor wasn’t a racial or moral issue; but was about exposure to wealth and high expectations.
Wealthy kids are exposed to it and are expected to become wealthy themselves one day, so they achieve it.
Three years ago, I began to get seven-figure clients into my coaching practice.
Black male corporate executives making $1M+
Blew. My. Mind.
Millionaires were coming to me for coaching.
Black male founders landing $47 million in Series B funding.
Black male real estate VP’s hitting 7-figures in total compensation.
These guys had incredible characters and were crushing it financially.
I knew I had found my tribe and began spreading the word.
“It’s possible! Here’s how they did it, we can do it, too!”
Guys I’m not at 7-figures yet.
I’m climbing the ladder just like you.
However, with the way business is going and how you guys support me, I’m on track to having a 7-figure business by next summer or fall.
Age 42, with 12 clients, living in Mexico, working Tuesday–Thursday with the other days off.
While earning 7-figures won’t happen overnight, it’s the expectation I now have for you.
High expectations are the standard here at Black Executive Men, alongside exposing you to the 7-figure brothers in my network.
That, along with the clarity of your 7-figure career goal and your accountability to get there (or closer to it), make for an unstoppable combination.
High expectations are what my friends gave me in high school to help me raise the bar to get to college.
High expectations are what my early clients gave me when I started Black Executive Men in 2015 to finally hit 6-figures.
And high expectations are what many of my current clients, coaches, and colleagues are giving me to help me reach 7-figures soon.
Having a coach who holds high expectations for you and places you in a community of like-minded, successful peers, will likely help you too.
Have a great weekend guys.
