Fulfilling Executive Jobs?
First generation corporate executives are doing the impossible
For many brothers, making an impact at work ranks highly.
Making an impact brings fulfillment.
It aligns you with purpose.
It gives you "feel-good" currency that money can’t buy.
However, money and seniority are important, too.
Without salary, seniority, and satisfaction, you may feel unfulfilled at work.
But is it possible to have all three?
For many Black men in executive roles, they are walking a tightrope daily.
They are one of the few, if not the only, brothers at their level of seniority.
They know how to code-switch, speak to relevant stakeholder groups, and still get the job done.
However, they believe that a dream job with the three S’s is impossible.
Their dad never had it; mom didn’t either.
Their friends may not have it.
Their bosses are putting in even more hours than them, which is unappealing.
They believe that work has to be hellish at worst or uninspiring at worst.
This lackluster scenario often bleeds over to negatively affect their marriage and presence with their kids.
Why wouldn’t it? They are only humans.
However, the reverse is also true.
Whether you are seeking your next executive role, looking for a promotion, or running your own business, you too should uphold your value.
