Black Gatekeepers

Navigating Professional Obstacles

Black gatekeepers are individuals within the Black community who hinder the progress of others, blocking their path to corporate success.

They may occupy senior leadership roles or work at organizations you aspire to join but refuse to help you advance or learn more about the company.

These gatekeepers can be men or women and span various age groups.

It is important not to assume that all Black people will support your success simply because they share your racial background.

The Black community encompasses a diverse range of thoughts, beliefs, ideologies, religions, and upbringings.

While there are common threads among us, real differences exist as well.

When encountering a Black gatekeeper, try not to take it personally; they don't owe you success or entrance into their organization. Instead of dwelling on this setback, acknowledge that many other Black individuals eagerly await the opportunity to champion your achievements and growth in your career.

To maximize your potential for success, seek out supportive mentors and colleagues who value helping fellow members of the Black community advance professionally.

However, remember that just because someone approaches you for professional assistance doesn't mean you're obligated to provide it—maintain high standards when choosing whom to let into your circle.

Consider keeping those with questionable character traits—such as dishonesty in communication or an unwillingness to put forth the effort—at arm's length while referring them elsewhere for resources and networking opportunities so they can develop professionally before re-engaging with them later on.

Brothers, be discerning with how you invest time in relationships related both personally and professionally while remaining open-minded toward supporting deserving peers who align with your values when opportunities arise.
