Cover Letters

Cover letters used to be a must-have—a way to introduce yourself, highlight key experiences, and make a strong first impression. But in today’s fast-moving, tech-driven hiring world, do they still hold weight? The answer: it depends.

For Black men in leadership, how you position yourself matters, and in some cases, a cover letter can still be a strategic advantage. Here’s when to use one and when to skip it.

When Cover Letters Still Matter

  1. Executive-Level and Competitive Roles – If you’re applying for C-suite, VP, or high-stakes leadership positions, a strong cover letter can set you apart by showcasing your vision and leadership philosophy.

  2. Career Pivots – If you’re shifting industries or roles, a cover letter helps connect the dots on why you’re the right fit.

  3. Small to Mid-Sized Firms – Larger corporations may not read them, but smaller companies and firms that value culture fit often still do.

  4. Private Equity, Consulting, and Non-Traditional Spaces – High-touch industries where relationships matter? A well-crafted cover letter can still open doors.

When You Can Skip It

  1. Online Applications & ATS-Heavy Processes – Many hiring systems scan resumes but don’t process cover letters. If the company doesn’t request one, it likely won’t be read.

  2. Recruiter-Led Searches – If you’re working with a recruiter, your resume and direct conversations carry more weight than a cover letter.

  3. Referral-Based Applications – When you have a strong internal connection, your introduction speaks louder than any letter.

The Bottom Line

Cover letters aren’t dead, but they’re not always necessary. For Black men in leadership, relationships and strategic positioning matter more. If a cover letter helps tell your story, use it. Otherwise, focus on networking, visibility, and direct connections to land your next big opportunity.

Let’s get to work.
