When you have job offers coming in, ultimately, it’s going to be time to pull the trigger.
The ideal scenario is that you have been applying, interviewing, and now getting multiple job offers coming your way.
This is the ideal scenario because it will make you more confident and stronger in the negotiation process, and you can really weigh the pros and cons of each role in each company to make the best decision for you and your family’s future.
However, it may be the case that out of all the options you have, nothing is absolutely perfect.
Let’s say you’re going for an SVP role that’s bringing in a total compensation package of $1.2 million, and you have to move to a city that your spouse doesn’t like, versus another offer with a total compensation package of $700,000, but you’re living next to your mom and dad, who are aging, and it would help you take care of them.
These are tough choices; however, on the bright side, they are all good choices.
You’re getting job offers.
However, here at Black Executive Men, we believe that anything is possible for Black men professionally, and expect you to be the best in the world at what you do.
We also expect you to be equipped with the very best job-seeking strategies without limiting your options to recruiters and cold applications.
With that being said, did you know that there are brothers out there struggling to get past the interview stage and aren't getting job offers or are getting extremely lowball job offers?
So one thing I want you to keep in mind is making a decision that’s not based on the immediate future, such as the next six months or one year, but on your 60-year-old self, your 65-year-old self, and even your 70-year-old self.
If the job really is a career move in the right direction, it’s OK to take a hit on pay, region, or, at times, even seniority if it’s going to advance your overall career.
Now, that’s not ideal.
However, if that’s the case for you, I want you to think about it with your 60-year-old self; in some cases, even your 55-year-old self, depending on how old you are.
Use this example.
When you’re 65 years old, sitting there with your multimillions and investments, passive income, real estate, and properties at home and abroad, will that small inconvenience of a role you took ten, fifteen, or even twenty years ago really matter?
Of course not.
The real question is which role is going to advance your overall career the most.
Therefore, when making a decision about your next role, you may have to accept something that you don’t like. That’s life. Sometimes we have to do things we don’t like.
However, if it can advance your overall career goals, which might be landing a higher-level senior leadership role in a certain company or your own entrepreneurial pursuit of opening up a hedge fund, large consulting firm, or international trading organization, ask yourself, "Does this role align with my overall long-term career goals or not?"
Then decide.
