Untapped Potential in Later Career Stages

No matter your age, there's always potential for success in corporate America or as an entrepreneur.
I often chat with men aged 55 and older, some who are entering the best earning years in their careers, others embarking on retirement.
They wonder if they still have untapped potential to reach executive-level positions or make entrepreneurial strides like launching a business or mentoring others.
The answer is a resounding 'yes.'
As Generation Z and millennials prepare to dominate the workplace over the next decade, opportunities for mentorship within organizations will surge.
Western society may not always deeply value its elders compared to cultures in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, but among Black communities in particular, there still exists a large opportunity for providing wisdom and guidance.
While the need for mentors is significant on the one hand, those between 55 and 65 years old also hold considerable corporate opportunities before them until they reach full retirement at around 65.
This retirement phase should ideally be devoted more towards entrepreneurial passions, board roles, real estate investments, and your stock portfolio, while also focusing on family time, spirituality, community leadership roles, mentorship, travel, fitness, and health.
Do not forget about running for President of the United States!
Yet for those of you between 55 and 65 who are currently contemplating your professional relevance, worry not!
Your value lies mainly in the experience that younger employees lack.
But remember, it's crucial to maintain an open mindset towards new ideas and technologies with this wealth of experience since these traits are greatly valued across organizations regardless of age.
It then boils down to leveraging your professional network effectively while vouching for your own work ethic during job hunts.
Become a thought leader by sharing insights either through newsletters like this one or podcast appearances, which can give you an edge over younger competitors due to your unique perspectives borne out of seasoned experiences.
After all, everyone has competitive advantages, whether young, middle-aged, or fourth quarter, so find yours, activate your network, and confidently stride into the role that fits perfectly.
